Celtic ratify Alexandro Bernabei loan departure; remaining left-back options come to light

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is continuing his squad cull mission at Parkhead as he aims to streamline the squad.

In January, David Turnbull, Mikey Johnston and Hyeokkyu Kwon were among those who departed, and the Irishman doesn’t look to be in a rush to stop trimming excess fat from his once-bloated group of players.

Israeli winger Liel Abada has completed his medical ahead of a move to Charlotte FC that will net the club a fee in the region of £10 million.

The 22-year-old looks set to bring the curtain down on a difficult period in Glasgow due to his well-documented off-field issues.

Forgotten man Yuki Kobayashi has attracted out-of-window interest from the likes of Finnish side HJK Helsinki. It remains to be finalised whether he can seal a move away from the reigning Scottish Premiership champions in the coming weeks.

Either way, Celtic appear to be one of the busier clubs in Europe regarding outgoings under Rodgers, and another fringe Hoops player has now walked through the exit door.

Celtic defender Alexandro Bernabei completes loan exit

Taking to their official website, Sport Club Internacional have announced that Celtic defender Alexandro Bernabei has completed a loan move to Beira-Rio for the rest of 2024.

Their club statement reads via translation: “Sport Club Internacional announces that it has reached an agreement with Celtic Football Club to announce the signing of left-back Alexandro Bernabei. He signs a loan contract with Clube do Povo until the end of 2024.

“The left-back began his professional career in 2019 at Lanús in Argentina. In his first season, he has already attracted attention, always characterized by his dedication, technical quality and speed. In total, he played 86 games for Lanús with 5 goals and 10 assists.

“In 2022, he went to Scotland to wear the Celtic shirt. Playing for the Scottish team, the Argentine athlete achieved important steps in his professional career, such as titles and international matches, debuting in the Champions League against Red Bull Leipzig.”

Signed for £3.75 million in 2022, the 23-year-old has made 28 appearances across all competitions wearing green and white, registering one goal and three assists [Transfermarkt].

Amid Bernabei’s confirmed departure, Greg Taylor is now the only senior left-back left at Parkhead for Rodgers to call upon.

In the case of an injury or a suspension involving the Scotland international, Anthony Ralston, Liam Scales, or Mitchel Frame would be likely to deputise in his place.
