European Commission swipes right on Tinder pricing rules

The dating app Tinder and the European Commission matched on measures to better inform customers about personalized prices on Thursday.

In 2022, the Swedish consumer association found that Tinder offered personalized prices for premium services to consumers without informing the customer.

The dating app also offered premium pricing based on age without informer the customer. This violated EU consumer rules, the commission said in a statement.

Starting in July 2022, the Dutch and Swedish consumer agencies led a process with Tinder to bring the company into compliance with EU regulations. Tinder had already stopped age-based pricing by April.

Personalizing measures "nullify the possibility to compare prices" and hinder customers in their purchasing decisions, European Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders said in a statement.

The commission and Tinder agreed that the dating app would not apply personalized pricing based on age without informing customers, the commission said.

Other personalized discounting would not be offered to customers without explaining their basis. Consumer agencies are to monitor Tinder's compliance with fines available as an option.
