US ski great Mikaela Shiffrin will make her comeback in the slalom in Åre on Sunday, but is opting out of the remaining speed races this season, effectively ending her bid for sixth overall World Cup title.

She will also skip the giant slalom in Sweden on Saturday as she continues to recover from a knee injury sustained in a downhill crash in January, the American announced during a virtual press round on Friday.

The battle for the big crystal globe will therefore almost certainly be decided between Switzerland's Lara Gut-Behrami and Italy's Federica Brignone, who are both ahead of Shiffrin in the overall standings with just Åre and the season-ender in Saalbach left.

The 28-year-old was leading the overall standings before her crash in Cortina d'Ampezzo.

She can still triumph for an eighth time in the slalom rankings, which she still tops.
