'Bends easier than a paper plate': Chris Sununu slammed for endorsing Trump

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley waves to supporters after receiving the endorsement of New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu during a Town hall event at McIntyre Ski Area on December 12, 2023 in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Republican New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu's decision to backtrack on his criticism of former President Donald Trump and endorse him in the 2024 race has spurred outrage from members of both parties — including many in his home state.

Sununu, an avid supporter of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and an outspoken critic of Trump's, announced he was throwing his support behind the lone-standing Republican's 2024 presidential campaign.

“I’m going to support the ticket," Sununu told WMUR. "I’m going to support Donald Trump."

Outrage was quick to follow.

CNN reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere wrote a blunt and expletive-focused timeline of Sununu's takes on Trump:

April 2022 - Chris Sununu on Trump: “he’s f---ng crazy”

Jan 2024; “If you go with the Trump path, obviously, it just gets — it's like throwing gasoline on a firework. It's just going to get so much worse.”

February 2024 - “A------- come and go.”

Today: endorses Trump

Manny Espitia, a former New Hampshire House representative, criticized Sununu's decision and celebrated the Republican's decision not to run for reelection in 2024.

"Absolutely bends easier than a paper plate," Espitia wrote. "All that tough guy talk... I'm glad he's not gonna be our Governor next year."

The Democratic National Committee issued a blistering response detailing more than a dozen public comments from Sununu criticizing Trump as "a loser," "crazy," "very extreme," "scared" and as having "lost the fastball."

"Sununu called Trump a coward and the definition of extremism who can barely keep a cogent thought%20sparred%20Tuesday,said%2C%20mocking%20the%20former%20president.)," said DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd in a statement. "And above all else, Sununu was right about one thing: Trump will lead to Republican losses up and down the ballot in November.”

The anti-Make America Great Again media group Resolute Square turned Sununu's cowardice critique on the New Hampshire Republican in a public statement.

"Sununu is a coward for putting party over country," they wrote. "He thinks backing Trump and towing the Party line will be good for his political career, but New Hampshirites and America will only see that he lacked courage in the moment for not stopping, but hopping on, the GOP crazy train."

The political group Republicans Against Trump shared a clip of Sununu arguing on Fox News that choosing Trump as the Republican nominee would ensure another victory for President Joe Biden.

"This is what putting party before country looks like," they wrote.
