Fallen concrete pieces affecting PATH train service at Journal Square

Small pieces of concrete that fell from the ceiling of the Journal Square PATH station in Jersey City have caused minor service disruptions since Thursday.

Small concrete pieces, described as the size of an apple, fell from the roof of the Journal Square station to the eastbound PATH platform at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, prompting officials to close the platform used by Newark-bound trains on the World Trade center line, said Seth Stein, a PATH spokesperson. No one was injured.

The platform was closed as a safety precaution and single tracking service was operated while repairs and an investigation were underway.

What that means is eastbound riders at Journal Square had to take a 33rd St. train to Grove Street station and transfer from there to World Trade center trains. Riders traveling east from Newark or Harrison had to go to Grove Street and transfer to a westbound World Trade Center train to access Journal Square.

Officials expect a similar bypass pattern to be used during Friday evening’s rush, but Stein urged PATH riders to watch PATH alerts on social media and the PATH app in case travel patterns change.

Additional PATH staff are at Journal Square to provide information and answer customer questions and signs have been updated to direct riders. Westbound service to Newark is not affected at Journal Square.

The cause is still under investigation, Stein said.
