‘Stepping up’: Ian Wright says 26-year-old Arsenal defender is really ‘magnificent’

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal beat Thomas Frank’s Brentford at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening, and Gunners legend Ian Wright was impressed with one particular defender.

Arsenal beat Brentford 2-1 at home in the Premier League on Saturday evening. Declan Rice scored for the Gunners in the first half, and Kai Havertz found the back of the net in the second period of the London derby.

Ben White provided both assists. The former Leeds United loanee is a centre-back by trade, but the 26-year-old, who is set to sign a new contract, has been playing at right-back for Arsenal.

White scored a brilliant goal against Sheffield United in the Premier League as well. The 26-year-old has scored two goals and given four assists in 25 starts in the league this season, and Arsenal legend Ian Wright has been impressed.

Ian Wright praises Arsenal defender Ben White

Wright said on BBC Match of the Day One: “I thought again Ben White was magnificent, Saka done very well.

“Obviously in the end, you are hearing Thomas Frank talking about Kai Havertz shouldn’t have been on the pitch. I have to agree with him, but it’s Declan Rice you are watching here.

“In this instance, Onyeka has got him, he should be looking at him, he doesn’t look at him, and once this ball comes in, Ben White has been brilliant you know, two assists. He has been playing very well.”

The pundit added: “They have to keep going, they know what they are chasing. They have to make sure that their home games have to be won, and that is what they have to do.

“You have got people like Ben White stepping up with his assists, Kai in four games, Declan scoring now, it has been brilliant.”

My View: Ben White is an unheralded star for Arsenal

In my opinion, Arsenal defender Ben White does not always get the praise that he deserves.

When we talk about the Arsenal attacking unit, we talk about the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard.

When people praise Arsenal’s defence, they talk about William Saliba and Gabriel. I think that White often goes under the radar.

White is a centre-back by trade, but the former Brighton and Hove Albion star is flourishing at right-back now, and we have to give credit to him.
