'Outstanding' Premier League midfielder is now one of Newcastle's leading transfer targets - journalist

A big summer is being predicted for Newcastle United.

Though the January transfer window proved arduous for Newcastle amid FFP frustrations behind the scenes, things may be different come the end of the season.

Indeed, a big summer rebuild at St James’ Park has been predicted.

One area that could surely do with a rejuvenation is in midfield. It remains to be seen how Sandro Tonali returns from missing so much action, while key players are being linked with moves away.

Both Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton have been touted for exits this summer, which perhaps explains why a Premier League midfielder is reportedly emerging as a leading target.

Newcastle transfer news: Amadou Onana latest

According to journalist Joel Bland on X, Everton’s Amadou Onana is liked behind the scenes.

He suggests the Belgian international has been put forward by Newcastle’s recruitment staff as one of their primary midfield targets this summer.

Interestingly, Newcastle’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson was in attendance as the Toffees lost to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Amadou Onana: Newcastle transfer target impressing in Premier League

It has not been easy for Onana since his move to Goodison Park from Lille in 2022, with the club constantly fighting relegations since.

Still, the 22-year-old has starred at times. He was labelled “outstanding” by pundit Darren Bent during Everton’s win over Arsenal in February of last year and has previously impressed Alan Shearer.

His 2.5 tackles per game (via WhoScored) beat anyone in Newcastle’s squad, perhaps offering more in the way of energy in midfield. The lack of defensive stability in that part of Eddie Howe’s squad has been noted upon this season, after all.

With Everton’s future uncertain on the takeover front, perhaps making a move this summer would be wise, should they need to sell.

Onana has certainly proven himself in England.
