French ministries hit by cyberattack of 'unprecedented intensity'

Several ministries and state institutions in France have been hit by a major cyberattack since Sunday evening, the government said.

The attacks on several government agencies are of an "unprecedented intensity," the government said on Monday, according to French media reports.

A crisis team was activated in the evening to take countermeasures. So far the impact has been reduced for most state services and access to government websites has been restored, it said.

Pro-Russian hackers claimed responsibility for the attack, according to Le Monde and Le Parisien newspapers and broadcaster BFMTV.

However, Le Parisien quoted a security official as saying that these attacks "cannot be attributed to the Russians at this stage."

France accuses Russia of increased attempts at destabilization since the start of the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched in 2022.

Tensions are running high between Russia and the West as Kiev seeks to repel Moscow's forces, with the help of Western aid.

France agreed with Germany and Poland to take joint action against Russian troll campaigns and cyberattacks last month. All three suffered the same Russian destabilization strategy and sought to fight back together, they said.

Troll factories spread disinformation on a large scale and websites are dedicated to fake news, as Moscow aims to create confusion among citizens, increase political polarization and destabilize democracies, a French minister said at the time.
