Dyson’s new vacuum has a couple of tricks up its sleeve — not only is it the most powerful cordless cleaner ever released by the British company, but it can also be used as a mop. Yes, really.
Known as the Dyson V15 Detect Submarine, this £799 cordless cleaner arrives with the first of a new generation of motors, dubbed Hyperdymium, that can reach top speeds of 135,000 rpm. For comparison, the engines on a Boeing 737 jet hit an average of 15,000 rotations-per-minute and Dyson’s motor regularly spins 9x faster than a Formula One engine.
That eye-watering speed enables the Dyson V15 Detect Submarine to suck up virus particles as small as 0.1 microns. Any viruses vacuumed up with the Dyson will be trapped in the HEPA filtration system, which packs 1.9m of filters folded over 145 times.
On the display, Dyson will reveal the exact quantity of particles removed as you clean.
Dyson V15 Detect Submarine follows in the footsteps of other vacuums in the “Detect” line-up with a dust-illuminating laser built into the motorised head. As you push the vacuum, the green laser will show hidden dust and particulates otherwise invisible to the naked eye.
Once you’ve vacuumed the floors, Dyson can swap out its motorised head for a self-contained wet roller head, known as the “Submarine”.
Although this attachment can snap onto older Dyson cordless models, they don’t have the software to work with the mop — so the motor will spin up and it’ll attempt to vacuum as normal.
But when connected to the new Dyson V15 Detect, the attachment will spray a pressurized jet of water onto the floor ahead of the microfibre rollers. Although the reservoir is just 300ml, Dyson says the fact that it pressurises the spray of water means it should be enough to cover 110m2.
A slightly larger 360ml dirty water tank collects everything as you move forward, so no debris is left behind on the floor.
Speaking about the launch, Charlie Park, who serves as Vice President of Floorcare R&D at Dyson, said: “Existing wet cleaning formats are commonly met with owner frustrations; largely around manoeuvrability, maintenance and pick up performance. Our solution solves these challenges and provides users with a multifunctional, compact yet powerful vacuum that takes deep cleaning to the next level.
“The launch of our first all-in-one wet-and-dry machine is an important step in Dyson’s commitment to improve everyday lives, and create cleaner, healthier homes. For the first time, we’re combining our dust illumination and sensing technologies, anti-tangle for soft furnishings and carpets alongside our new wet roller head to wash hard floors.”
Dyson is fuelling its new vacuum with a seven-cell battery that it says will offer 60-minutes of suction (and mopping) power for whole-home deep cleaning. The company also sells additional battery packs for longer cleans.
British entrepreneur James Dyson, who founded Dyson and still serves at its Chief Engineer, said: “It is the combination of our dust light optic technology, dust particle counting and sizing, pioneering new motor and whole-machine HEPA filtration, that enables you to achieve our deepest ever clean.”
Unlike older cordless models from Dyson, there’s no need to hold down the trigger for the entire time that you’re cleaning. Instead, there’s now a simple power button to start-up the engine.
