'Pure class': Danny Murphy says Man City have a midfielder capable of things other players wouldn't even try

Danny Murphy believes Manchester City have a midfield star who can do things most other players wouldn’t even attempt, he’s that good.

Manchester City managed to hold on for a draw in a thrilling match with Liverpool on Sunday.

The match was hyped massively beforehand but lived up to its billing in a thrilling encounter which has blown the Premier League title race wide open.

City took the lead when John Stones turned home a corner but Alexis Mac Allister hit back from the penalty spot just after the break.

Though Jurgen Klopp’s side dominated the second half and had plenty of chances to win, the Blues did hit the woodwork twice through Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku.

An enthralling encounter ended all square but Danny Murphy was left particularly impressed by one moment of magic fromKevin De Bruyne.

The brilliant Belgian setup Stones’ goal with a unique corner in which he whipped in an outswinger to the near post for the defender to stab home.

It took unreal accuracy and skill from De Bruyne and was something Murphy believes not many other players would even try.

Danny Murphy praises Kevin De Bruyne

Speaking on Match of the Day 2, Murphy said: “So precise but he’s capable.

“That’s why they were probably trying to think of doing something most people wouldn’t try and do.

“Because it’s so difficult a technique because if he kicks it out of play he looks ridiculous.

“But that’s Kevin De Bruyne, just pure class.”

A brilliant ploy

On a day De Bruyne, and City in general, were knocked off their best game by a quality opponent, they still managed to show some incredible ingenuity.

The corner routine was expertly done, a brainchild of setpiece coach Carlos Vicens, having been practised on the training ground ahead of the game.

It will give opponents yet something else to worry about when City next have a corner alongside the giants of Erling Haaland, Rodri and Ruben Dias.

It was quite ironic, too, given the stir Trent Alexander-Arnold caused with his comments about City’s trophy wins in the week, that Liverpool were suckered by a similar ploy the right-back famously used against Barcelona.
