A fire broke out at a large refugee accommodation centre in Berlin on Tuesday afternoon, with a large contingent of the fire brigade on site to battle the blaze.

Three temporary structures were reportedly on fire at the refugee accommodation centre, located on the grounds of the former Tegel airport, according to a spokesman for the Berlin fire brigade.

A thick cloud of smoke could be seen over the former airport site.

The spokesman added that 100 firefighters were on their way to the fire.

"We expect several people to be injured," he said.
