The trade union verdi is calling for an all-day strike on Thursday at several German airports including Berlin and Hamburg, it announced in Berlin on Tuesday.

The strikes in the ongoing wage dispute involving security staff will affect Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe/Baden Baden airports, verdi said.

The union called on employees in passenger checks, passenger and goods checks, cargo checks and service areas to strike.

Collective bargaining in aviation security concerns the working conditions of around 25,000 employees of private security service providers. They check passengers, staff and baggage at the entrances to the security area on behalf of the Federal Police.

In the southern state of Bavaria, these workers are employed in the public sector, which is covered by a different collective labour agreement.

During the first wave of strikes on February 1 at 11 major airports, the airport association ADV estimates that around 1,100 flights were cancelled because passengers were no longer able to access the security areas.
