‘Unusual’: Chris Sutton thinks Ange Postecoglou has said something out of the ordinary about Tottenham recently

Chris Sutton thinks Ange Postecoglou has said something ‘unusual’ about Tottenham Hotspur recently.

Ange Postecoglou has enjoyed a promising debut campaign in north London so far. The Aussie walked into a difficult situation over the summer after Tottenham missed out on European competition for the first time since 2009.

It’s led to Postecoglou having fewer games to worry about this season, especially as Spurs exited both the League Cup and FA Cup in the early stages.

But the former Celtic boss admitted earlier this month that he feels Tottenham haven’t had enough games this term.

“Definitely, yeah, because I think, for us, a club like us who want to compete at the highest level against the best, you need a strong squad and to have a strong squad you need consistent games and consistent game time and opportunities,” the Spurs boss told Football.London.

“At the moment, if we get an injury then we’re liable to throw somebody in who hasn’t played for four or five weeks. It’s not easy on that player, whereas if you’ve got games, there’s a natural rotation that you need to make all the time and also gives you a little bit of rhythm. I had the other extreme last year of 60-plus games at Celtic, but I found that a lot easier to manage than having less games or having a disrupted season like we’ve had this year.”

And Sutton has labelled Postecoglou’s comments as ‘unusual’ due to managers normally complaining about fixture pile-ups.

Speaking on The Monday Night Club, Sutton discussed Postecoglou’s recent comments on wanting more games.

“I think Ange Postecoglou said last week that they could actually do with more games, which is unusual for a Premier League manager to say as they are always harping on about there are too many games,” he said.

Sutton added: “I think about getting the players into a rhythm, games coming thick and fast. Give him a season when they’re in the thick of a Europa League or Champions League run, he may think differently. I think it’s about finding a rhythm and that’s the way he’s pretty much always been.”

While managers of top clubs usually complain about having too many games, you can understand where Postecoglou is coming from here.

Had Spurs been in the Europa League or even the Conference League this season, it would have handed the Aussie more opportunities to take a closer look at his squad players.

This would also mean that when Tottenham inevitably pick up injuries, which has happened frequently this term, their squad players would be better equipped to hit the ground running.

With that being said, it will be intriguing to see if Postecoglou changes his tune next season should Spurs qualify for Europe once again.
