US announces first Ukraine military aid package since late 2023

The package includes artillery rounds and Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) munitions for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).

"Today, on behalf of [U.S.] President [Joe] Biden, I’m announcing an emergency package of security assistance of $300 million worth of weapons and equipment to address some of Ukraine's pressing needs," Sullivan said.

He also mentioned that the new package would allow "Ukrainian weapons to keep firing for a while," but this is far from sufficient to satisfy needs on the battlefield, and the Ukrainian Defense Forces risk running out of ammunition in the coming weeks. Sullivan urged the U.S. Congress to approve the $60 billion aid package for Ukraine as soon as possible.

Sullivan explained that the United States has managed to save money on Pentagon contracts by replacing equipment already delivered to Ukraine, thus allowing for additional funding to facilitate the aid package.

Earlier, Politico reported that, according to unnamed U.S. officials, the upcoming security assistance package will include ATACMS ballistic missiles with APAM (Anti-Personnel/Anti-Materiel) cluster warheads.

The last military aid package to Ukraine from Washington was allocated in late December 2023.
