Richard Keys hints the time may have come for Newcastle to replace Eddie Howe with 61-year-old manager

Richard Keys appears to be on a mission to oust Eddie Howe as Newcastle United manager.

The broadcaster has once again questioned Eddie Howe‘s credentials as Toon boss, after the Magpies were beaten 3-2 by Chelsea on Monday night.

It was a massively disappointing performance from Newcastle United, who remain 10th in the Premier League.

There has been a serious regression from Newcastle this season, with Howe’s side nowhere near to equalling their accomplishments from the 2022/23 campaign.

There have been some great moments, but we have largely gone backwards. Personally, I do not think you can look beyond the injuries, while it was always going to be incredibly difficult to replicate what we achieved last season.

But Richard Keys thinks that the wheels have now come off, and has suggested that it is time for the Toon owners to change manager. And he wants Jose Mourinho to replace Howe.

Richard Keys suggests Jose Mourinho should replace Eddie Howe

After Newcastle’s loss against Chelsea, Keys took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to comment on the ‘Geordie revolution’, stating that Newcastle need a manager like Jose Mourinho to guarantee trophies.

“What’s happened to the Geordie revolution? It was great to see the Toon mixing it with the big boys last season. Why have the wheels come off so quickly? Is it time for phase2? And Jose? There are no guarantees of a trophy in football – unless you employ him.”

Richard Keys’ Newcastle theory is ridiculous

This is the fourth time this year that Richard Keys has suggested Mourinho should become Newcastle United manager.

It is getting ridiculous now. Keys seems obsessed with the ideal of the 61-year-old taking over at St James’ Park, but that would be a massive mistake.

While he is an illustrious manager, his reputation is massively diminished nowadays – and for good reason. Mourinho is not the manager he once was, and appointing him as Newcastle boss would be a blunder. It is a blunder that people in the media, like Keys, are hoping Toon officials make – probably because it would create headlines.

But Eddie Howe is the right man for Newcastle United. This is a project, and success will not arrive overnight. It is not as simple as that, despite people thinking otherwise.

The wheels have not fallen off, even if this season has been disappointing. There should not be a kneejerk reaction, and that is exactly what sacking Howe would be. And replacing him with Mourinho would be absolute madness.
