Report: 'Excellent' 24 y/o wanted by Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday now set to become free agent

Sheffield Wednesday have found out Leeds United’s stance on Ian Poveda.

Sheffield Wednesday signed Poveda on loan from Leeds United in January, and the Owls faithful have since fallen in love with the Colombian international.

Described as ‘excellent’ by BBC reporter Rob Staton, Poveda has featured seven times in the Championship for Sheffield Wednesday, claiming one assist.

His creativity and trickery has mesmerised fans and has been a massive factor behind the upturn in form at Hillsborough.

And with Poveda out of contract at Elland Road in the summer, many would like to see him make his stay in S6 permanent.

Ian Poveda has played his last game for Leeds United

Poveda, 24, joined Leeds United during the 2019/20 season, but has since failed to make an impression.

He’s made 25 league appearances for the club with seven of those coming in the first half of this current Championship campaign.

But Poveda finds himself well down the pecking order and with Leeds eyeing promotion, it looks like they’ve made a decision to not renew his contract ahead of the summer.

Football Insider are reporting that Poveda has now played his last game for Leeds United and that he’ll become a free agent in the summer.

It was previously reported that Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl was keen on signing Poveda on permanent deal this summer.

A major boost for Sheffield Wednesday, but one condition remains

Poveda has certainly shown his class at Sheffield Wednesday, and after some mixed years with some tough loan spells elsewhere, it looks like Poveda is finally flourishing under the guidance of Rohl.

So it would be understandable if Poveda wants to remains at Hillsborough and keep on playing under Rohl.

But there seems to be two moving parts here; Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship status and Rohl’s future at the club.

Sheffield Wednesday remain in the bottom three despite their upturn in form, with a point between them and safety.

And there’s rumours of Championship interest in Rohl too, so there could be a lot of change at the club this summer and that may deter Poveda from joining on a permanent deal.

But if the Owls stay up then it seems certain that Rohl stays too, and that could mean that Poveda joins in what would be a hugely positive knock-on effect.

He certainly adds a bit of spark and energy to the XI and without him, as the Owls were against Leeds last time out, the team just lacks that bit of bite in the final third.

Expect there to be other teams sniffing around him though, given his positive form for Sheffield Wednesday, so a move for Poveda certainly has some obstacles as things stand.
