Ukraine has managed to repatriate a mother with four children and a teenager from the temporarily occupied territories by Russia, according to Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration.
"Five children escaped the horrors of occupation and can now live a free and safe life. We managed to bring back a mother with four children, aged 7 to 12. The large family could not leave (the ocupied territories - ed.) on their own for a long time. But when appropriate conditions were provided for them, the family immediately agreed," he said.
Also, a 17-year-old boy has been successfully repatriated.
"The boy refused to obtain a Russian passport, hence was forced to hide from the so-called occupation authorities," the head of the administration reported.
Overall, since the beginning of 2024, Ukraine has successfully repatriated 35 children from the Kherson region.
Children deportation from Ukraine
Russian aggressors have repeatedly deported Ukrainian children to the territory of the Russian Federation.
Last year, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, as he was implicated in such deportations.
In January of this year, Dmytro Lubinets, the human rights commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada, revealed that Ukraine had managed to repatriate a total of 517 children up to that point.
