David Raya has praised Arsenal’s supporters for helping the Gunners win their penalty shoot-out against Porto last night.
Following a tense 120 minutes of action at the Emirates Stadium, David Raya proved to be the hero with a dazzling display during the penalty shoot-out.
Leandro Trossard netted in the first half with a well-taken finish but Porto proved to be a tough opponent for Arsenal on the night.
Fortunately for Mikel Arteta, his four penalty-takers were up to the task and Raya produced two brilliant saves to deny Wendell and Galeno.
Martin Odegaard won the coin tosses before the shoot-out and opted for both sides to take their penalties in the end full of Arsenal fans.
And Raya believes the supporters helped them get over the line on Tuesday evening.
Raya on ‘fantastic’ Arsenal fans
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Raya made a claim about Arsenal’s home supporters last night.
“The fans have been fantastic; they’ve been fantastic for a long time,” he said. “Especially today, we needed them.
“They made some noise and got us through spells in which we needed them. They were there for us, and we were there for them.
“We had the fans behind our goal as well and that put a lot of pressure on them and that worked for us. I think that helped us to win the penalty shootout.”
Each time a Porto player stepped up to take a penalty, boos rang around the Emirates.
You could also see the Arsenal supporters doing their best to distract Porto’s penalty-takers.
While it was ultimately Raya’s heroics which saw the Gunners through, Arsenal’s supporters certainly played their part.
With last night’s win, Arsenal have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2010.
Arteta’s focus will now switch back to the league as they have over two weeks to prepare for a huge clash at Manchester City.
