Daniel Farke's strongest Leeds United starting XI when every player is back fit - opinion

Daniel Farke is undoubtedly blessed with one of the strongest squads in the Championship at Leeds United.

The Whites currently sit second in the table on an impressive 79 points from 37 matches and since the turn of the New Year, Farke has really got this squad clicking into gear.

Having been nine adrift of Ipswich Town and a further eight behind Leicester City, Leeds had been someway off the pace following the festive period but a run of 12 wins in 13 matches has put automatic promotion in their hands.

In that time, Leeds have had to deal with injury problems to the likes of Pascal Struijk, Patrick Bamford and Dan James, but have managed to cope thanks to the strength of their squad.

Thankfully, it is only the former who remains on the sidelines at this stage, but his impending return after the international break will leave Farke with some big decisions.

So, with that in mind, here is what we think Leeds’ strongest XI looks like when everyone is fit.

Goalkeeper

Illan Meslier has looked backed to his best since serving a suspension for that stupid red card at Preston North End, and is, of course, number one.

Defence

It is in the back four where things start to get really tricky, though. Leeds have conceded just three goals since the turn of the New Year, with the partnership of Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu having excelled.

However, Farke simply has to find a place for Struijk when he is back, and that means pushing Ampadu back into midfield, which is still undoubtedly his best position.

There are also a couple of big decisions at full-back, though Junior Firpo appears to just about have the nod over Sam Byram at the moment on the left due to his attacking threat.

Taking everything into account, Connor Roberts is probably Leeds’ best right-back, despite Archie Gray’s incredible breakthrough season, the majority of which has been at the back.

Midfield

Ilia Gruev and Glen Kamara have formed an incredible partnership over the last few weeks but considering the selections at the back, neither actually get in this team.

Ampadu and Gray showed just how good they were up against a £200 million+ midfield at Chelsea last month, making them just about the strongest duo.

However, Leeds really wouldn’t be that much weaker with one or both of Gruev and Kamara starting.

Attack

At this stage of the season, three of the attacking places very much pick themselves. Bamford is now firmly first choice ahead of Joel Piroe, with Crysencio Summerville on the left, and Georginio Rutter as a number 10.

Dan James had been in a superb run of form up until his injury in January, but Wilfried Gnonto has shown just how good he is since coming into the team, and so just about starts ahead of him.

Best Leeds XI: Meslier; Roberts, Rodon, Struijk, Firpo; Ampadu, Gray; Gnonto, Rutter, Summerville; Bamford
