'At the moment': Fabrizio Romano says Newcastle are happy with £12m player and aren't planning to sell him

Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on the future of one Newcastle United star who could have left the club back in January.

Bayern Munich made multiple offers for Kieran Trippier in the last window but it’s believed that none of their bids matched Newcastle’s valuation of the defender.

Now, Romano has been speaking to Caught Offside where he claims that Newcastle are happy with Trippier and hoping to keep him around for the future, but we’ll have to wait and see what the summer brings.

Romano says Newcastle hoping to keep star defender

Trippier has been a hugely important figure for Newcastle in the last two years both on and off the pitch and although he’s now 33-year-old he’s still got a lot of quality to offer the team.

There were suggestions in January that he was past his best on the way down after making a couple of key mistakes, but since then he’s been his usual top self and performing at a high level.

It’s understood that Bayern Munich’s offers were around the £12m-£13m mark which simply wasn’t enough for Newcastle despite his age and length of contract, and they wanted to keep his experience in the team.

He could, of course, still make a move in the summer, especially if they fail to qualify for any European tournament this season, but Romano says that Newcastle are very happy with his contributions and will be hoping he stays part of the team.

On Trippier, Romano said: “At the moment Newcastle are still happy with Trippier to stay and be part of their project, that’s why they rejected the chance to sell him to Bayern Munich in the January window. But it’s still March so let’s wait before mentioning final decisions for the summer.”

Newcastle have an ideal Trippier replacement

It’s obviously not on their minds at the minute as they look to keep hold of all of their best players this summer, but losing Trippier in the coming months wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen to Newcastle.

Losing someone like Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak would be huge as they are pretty much irreplaceable, but Newcastle already have Tino Livramento prepared to make the step up at right-back.

In most of the games that the 21-year-old has featured in he has stood out as one of Newcastle’s best players – even in the latest disappointing defeat to Chelsea he was still a shining light in the team.

Newcastle can at least find comfort in the fact that if they were to lose someone as quality as Trippier in the summer they wouldn’t have to splash the cash to find an immediate replacement.
