'He's a genius': Thierry Henry says 47-year-old manager Liverpool reportedly want is 'second to none'

Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi has been linked with the Liverpool job, and Thierry Henry believes he is a ‘genius’.

The Reds are on the lookout for a new boss after Jurgen Klopp confirmed he would be stepping down at the end of the season. A number of names have been mentioned as potential targets, including Inzaghi.

Thierry Henry says Liverpool-linked Simone Inzaghi is a ‘genius’

Simone Inzaghi has done a truly incredible job at Inter Milan.

The 47-year-old led his side to a second-place finish in his first season there, just two points behind eventual winners AC Milan.

Inter then made it into the final of the Champions League last season, and are now at the top of the Serie A table – 16 points ahead of AC Milan, who are second.

Inzaghi will almost definitely win the league this term, and that’s probably why Liverpool are said to be interested in appointing him as Jurgen Klopp’s successor. (Tutto Sport)

Thierry Henry was speaking about Inzaghi on CBS Sports last night, and it’s safe to say he is a big fan of the Inter Milan manager.

He said: “Yes, I am (fond of his system). They quite often say that strikers cannot be good managers. Well, it defies the logic at the moment because the way he is setting up his team is second to none.

“He was known as a cup coach, but now, he’s going to win the league, we know that.”

Henry then broke down some of Inzaghi’s tactics at Inter Milan, and it was a fascinating watch. He made one point about the Italian’s use of his defenders that really caught our eye.

He said: “This is something that they didn’t do so much this year. I had to go back to a goal that they scored last year against Roma. Wing-back to wing-back – we’ve seen this before, Conte did it, they’re doing it.

“But, there’s something that I’ve never seen before. At the weekend, I never saw that before, look at the shape of their back-five.”

Henry shows a clip where their two centre-backs are high and wide, almost like wingers, while their wing-backs are high and central, on the same line as the opponent’s defence. Then, he shows how one centre-back assists another for their goal.

“I’ve never seen, in open play, at 0-0, away, the left centre-back crossing the ball to the right centre-back to score a goal. In my life, I’ve never seen that. This guy, Inzaghi, he’s a genius!”

Inzaghi is an elite manager

Inter Milan were knocked out of the Champions League last night, but that doesn’t mean Simone Inzaghi is a bad coach.

The work the 47-year-old has done at the San Siro is nothing short of incredible since he became the manager.

His side have absolutely dominated the Serie A this season, and we’re not surprised at all that he has admirers everywhere. Thierry Henry sure loves him.

Inzaghi is reportedly on Liverpool‘s radar. He would be a very different manager compared to Jurgen Klopp, especially with respect to his philosophy.

However, if Liverpool can accept that, we think he would be a very interesting appointment.
