How 'Infectious' Wolves loanee could yet hold the keys to Gary O'Neil's summer plans - opinion

Wolves could still benefit from Fabio Silva this season, despite the young striker being on loan in Scotland and seemingly out of favour with Gary O’Neil.

Gary O’Neil is enjoying an odds-defying season with Wolves, as the Old Gold prepare for their FA Cup quarter-final challenge against Coventry City on Saturday.

The Midlands club are in a good position to book a visit to Wembley if they are to beat the Championship side, with the campaign still having the capacity to present O’Neil’s side with European football next term.

With their sights firmly set on the tasks in hand, both the manager and the squad will be putting any talk of the summer on mute as the transfer window beckons and rumours begin.

Despite the summer break still being two months away, Wolves could already see a way to relieve their financial pressures, with the form of one player having the potential to significantly benefit the club.

How Fabio Silva can help Gary O’Neil’s summer plans

Currently far from Molineux playing in Glasgow, 2020 arrival Fabio Silva could influence O’Neil’s future plans at Wolves.

After being sent on loan to Rangers for the second half of the 2023/24 campaign, the Portuguese forward has impressed at times for Philippe Clement’s side, netting four goals in 13 appearances so far.

In the first half of the season, Silva struggled once again to impose himself at Molineux, failing to score in the eight Premier League appearances he was handed by the manager and looking far off the pace required to be seen as a reliable source of goals.

While Silva’s future looks to be far from Wolves, taking into consideration how he has faired at the club so far, the 21-year-old could still benefit his parent team if his form continues to impress at Ibrox.

If the youngster were to gather admirers for his form in the Scottish Premiership, Wolves could find themselves in a position to offload the forward for a fair price, in a bid to counteract the £35m they paid for him as a teen.

Wolves must look to offload Fabio Silva

While it’s a shame that things haven’t yet worked out for Silva at Molineux, there is only so much time Wolves can give the striker before looking to gift his services to a club elsewhere.

Having secured 72 appearances for the Old Gold, it can’t be said that the forward hasn’t had the opportunity to impress with the Premier League side.

Silva has only found himself on the scoresheet five times since his arrival in 2020, numbers far from acceptable for a striker that cost in excess of £30m.

As well as his inability to win over a series of managers at Wolves, the club are paying the 21-year-old a staggering £80k-a-week, money that could be saved if the Old Gold were to permanently offload him.

Lauded as having an “infectious” approach to training by Rangers teammate Connor Goldson, it’s clear that Silva has found a place he can call home at Ibrox, with the hope that his form can continue to encourage buyers to hand Wolves a viable fee in the summer.

Considering the financial battle that O’Neil is braced to combat in the summer transfer window, freeing up the wage bill and receiving a fair figure for Silva would certainly give the Englishman more room to plan ahead at Molineux.
