Rangers v Benfica - Team news confirmed, Todd Cantwell returns, surprise wing call

Rangers face Benfica for a place in the Europa League quarter finals with several big hitters still left in the competition.

Gers boss Philippe Clement took over a side that had just lost to Cypriot opposition but has rejuvenated a squad that has managed to get results in both Spain and Portugal.

It was a frenetic encounter at the Estadio da Luz and Ibrox should be no different, this is your Rangers team tasked with seeing off Benfica.

Rangers v Benfica – Team news confirmed

Jack Butland will be buzzing, fresh from a call up to the England squad, he will want to repeat his heroics from last week.

Although I’m sure he would rather have a quiet night.

John Souttar and Connor Goldson were outstanding in Portugal and the centre-half duo were unlucky to be involved in the two goals that were conceded.

At home, Ridvan Yilmaz and James Tavernier will be expected to get forward more and both are capable of causing Benfica problems.

Midfield options are a bit more limited though and the three of John Lundstram, Mohamed Diomande and Tom Lawrence will be fully aware of the threat that their opponents carry in the engine room.

In the first leg, it seemed to only take them two passes and they were putting us under pressure.

Having Todd Cantwell back is a huge boost though and his energy and ability on the ball is exactly what we need.

The forward line practically picks itself.

Fabio Silva was particular impressive on the left in Portugal and Sccott Wright must be the fittest winger we have.

Rabbi Matondo and Ross McCausland can provide respite from off the bench when he tires.

And, if ever there was a time for Cyriel Dessers to rediscover his goalscoring form, now would be it.

Here is your XI picked to get the job done:

This could be a really open game of football but the first team to score will be in a very strong position to make it to the quarter finals.

Hopefully, a repeat of 2022 and our famous run to the final is on the cards.
