Heidenheim's Jan-Niklas Beste was surprised to receive his and the club's first Germany call-up on Thursday.

Heidenheim, from a town of just 50,000 people in south-west Germany, have excelled in their debut Bundesliga season and look safe from relegation. Beste and his dead ball prowess have especially shone.

"I've said time and again recently that I wasn't expecting this nomination. After all, it wasn't even a year ago that I was still playing in the second division with Heidenheim," the club's top scorer said in a club statement on Thursday.

"Of course, this fulfils something that probably almost every little boy in Germany dreams of - that's how it was for me too."

Julian Nagelsmann's squad will play France in Lyon on March 23 and the Netherlands at home three days later ahead of the home European Championship in June and July.

Beste, 25, was one of six newcomers in the squad.

"This call-up fills us with extraordinary pride," Heidenheim chief executive Holger Sanwald said. "Niki has developed fantastically in the one-and-a-half years he has been with us and is an absolute top performer.

We, like the entire Heidenheim family, are delighted for him and of course, that we as a club are able to send a player to the German senior national team for the first time."
