Former N.J. band director sexually assaulted a second student, authorities say

Authorities in Bergen County have charged a former band teacher with additional counts of sexual assault accusing him of sexual contact with a second student in a separate school district, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said Thursday.

Kurt Zimmermann, 55, of Rockaway Township, was arrested and charged with three counts of second-degree sexual assault Wednesday regarding alleged sexual contact with a student while teaching in the Morris Hills Regional School District.

The additional charges are the result of an investigation earlier this year that accused Zimmermann of engaging in sexual conduct with a former student between the ages of 13 and 17 at Westwood Regional Middle School and Westwood Regional High School on multiple occasions while he was Director of Bands, authorities said.

The new charges involve a student between the ages of 16 and 18, authorities said. The incidents occurred in the past, officials said, and no date ranges were provided by authorities Thursday. Court records indicate the incident involving the Westwood student occurred in 2011.

Zimmermann was identified in the initial investigation after the Hopatcong Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in January about reports of alleged sexual conduct between a teacher and student in Westwood, authorities said.

Zimmermann’s Linkedin profile notes that he was most recently an administrator in the Hopatcong School District. A message left with the district’s superintendent was not immediately returned Thursday.

Zimmerman was arrested in Rockaway on Wednesday and remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending an initial court appearance.

An attorney for Zimmerman was not immediately reachable Thursday afternoon.
