The Newark Advertiser found out what events people would like to see in the town centre

In its weekly voxpop, the Advertiser found out what sort of events people would like to see taking place in the town centre.

Newark’s town centre has faced a decline of 10.3% in its footfall in the last quarter.

As a result of it, two major new events are being developed in a bid to combat the declining footfall in the town centre.

We went around to hear from people what sort of events would attract them to the centre. Answers varied according to people’s tastes, from music festivals to car shows, and curious and diverse markets to themed events.

“The market square is beautiful, it needs something like a car show so people with that interest can come and have a look,” said Ivone Jones.

She added: “Even though I am not a car enthusiast I think I would just come and have a look around, perhaps a specific model of car like a Volkswagen campervan, things like that that are just fun.

“It would be nice to see the cafe culture expanding a bit in the summer.”

Sarah Cullens said: “I like Newarkbut if there was something in the market place, like the beach didn’t stay on for long and that is a shame, maybe something like that but for a longer period of time.”

Martin Jones: “I would come here more often if there were interesting markets.

“Just interesting market stalls with different things.”

Tricia Roberts said: “Anything diverse that would attract people to town would be good.”

Alice Pacey said: “They should do more 1940s events because they stopped doing them but they bring people in.

“They do the 1940s events and travel around. Things like the Steampunk events, themed events bring people to town and into the shops.”

Deborah Parker said: “Music events and bongo bingo.”
