Southwell Town Council agree schedule for decorations in town centre, including new Minster 140 flags

A bright display of flags and flowers are set to celebrate a town’s heritage and the 140th anniversary of its cathedral.

A new flag design is set to fly from Southwell’s flagpoles this summer to mark 140 years since the Minster was granted cathedral status.

It was approved by the town council’s town environment committee on Wednesday (March 13), and is in keeping with the purple and gold colour scheme chosen for the cathedral’s celebrations.

The agreed flag design features a simple outline of the Minster’s west window and pepperpot towers.

Councillors agreed it would be “nice to have a flag to represent the Minster” but emphasised the importance of the design not being year-specific so they can be flown more than once.

The number of Minster flags will be decided dependent upon cost — and they will be flown mixed with the Union Jack between May 22 and August 24, and then mixed with Heritage Flags from August 24 to November 4.

They will be in place during the Gate to Southwell Festival, Southwell Music Festival, Heritage Day and the Bramley Apple Festival.

A purple and gold planting scheme has been proposed for the nine planters around the town, and the planters on the town’s entry signs.

Permission is also being sought from Nottinghamshire County Council for cross-street bunting in King Street.

The Minster flags are not the only ones to be flying through the year.

The clubs and societies flags will be flown from March 25 to May 22, and from November 4 to November 18, Union Jacks and Remembrance Flags will be flown.

From May 22 to November 4 the streets will also be lined with the town’s 40 summer hanging baskets, and from November 18 to January 6, 2025, the town’s Christmas trees will be in place.

The streets were lit up by the town's Christmas trees last Winter.

The schedule was approved by councillors, and was designed to reduce the number of ladder climbs council staff had to undertake.
