However on Friday morning at around 6am, according to website Downdetector which monitors IT problems in companies, issues began to emerge across the UK.

McDonald's says it is working to resolve the issue, which is unrelated to cyber-security.

"We are aware of a technology outage, which impacted our restaurants; the issue is now being resolved," McDonald's said in a statement.

Some customers in England have taken to social media to report problems with ordering their food or collecting items placed via the app.

The official McDonald's Japan twitter account has confirmed that its stores are experiencing a 'system failure' while a spokesman in Australia said the firm was aware of an issue affecting branches nationwide.
