Footage from Crystal Palace shows Oliver Glasner doing something very interesting with Tyrick Mitchell

Tyrick Mitchell has been an intriguing player to watch ever since Oliver Glasner replaced Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace.

The England international has been asked to play higher up the field in a wing-back role after the Austrian switched to a 3-4-3 formation.

Since his emergence, the Crystal Palace No.3 has made a name for himself thanks to his defensive qualities, just like Aaron Wan-Bissaka did, although there are still plenty of question marks about his attacking capabilities.

Oliver Glasner seems to be recognising this, as Tyrick Mitchell was spotted doing something interesting while Crystal Palace trained in Marbella…

What Oliver Glasner did with Tyrick Mitchell

Well, footage posted by Crystal Palace showed the 49-year-old organising an attacking drill.

From the 7:15 mark onwards, Mitchell is heavily involved in situations where he attacks the ball at the back post as crosses are swung in from out wide.

This was particularly interesting to us, as the 24-year-old has found himself in promising situations at the back post several times across Glasner’s first three games in charge.

Mitchell saw a low shot saved by Thomas Kaminski in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Luton Town after gatecrashing the box, and was also frequently involved in attacks during the 3-0 win over Burnley.

Aside from 18 months under Patrick Vieira, the Brent-born defender has only known the rigid defensive style of Hodgson since breaking into the first-team.

That is evident through the fact Mitchell has only scored one goal and provided two assists in 31 appearances this season, so it would make sense for Glasner to work on this side of his game.

If the Crystal Palace academy graduate can shine between now and the end of the season, he could even make Gareth Southgate’s England squad for UEFA EURO 2024, given the lack of available left-backs right now.

Crystal Palace could sign competition

Mitchell may also be playing for his place under Glasner this season.

A story by Alan Nixon claims that Crystal Palace will make another attempt to sign Lewis Hall from Chelsea this summer, after the England U21 international’s loan spell at Newcastle did not go to plan.

If that move materialises, it would provide fierce competition for Mitchell on the left, so the Crystal Palace No.3 must impress in the remaining fixtures of this season.
