Big Gianluca Scamacca twist could be a real fly in the ointment for West Ham and Moyes

Gianluca Scamacca could come back to haunt West Ham United in the Europa League this season.

West Ham boss David Moyes sold Gianluca Scamacca to Atalanta in the summer of 2023 for around £27 million, after the 25-year-old struggled to make much of an impact at the London Stadium.

Scamacca has really struggled with Atlanta as well at times, and has been accused recently of spending more time worrying about playing his playstation than improving his performances for the Serie A outfit.

However, things have turned round for the Italian over the past couple of weeks.

The former Hammers hitman has now bagged two goals in his last three games, and the Italian media have changed their tune on him big time.

Tutto Atalanta have absolutely raved about Scamacca after finally finding his feet following the ‘tortuous path’ he took when joining the club in the summer. And now Moyes could end up ruing selling the ex-Sassuolo striker…

Gianluca Scamacca twist could be fly in Europa League ointment for West Ham

The 6ft 5in forward was in fine form for Atalanta in the Europa League last night. He scored the goal against Sporting that took his side through to the quarter-finals of the competitions, setting up a huge clash with Liverpool.

Now, whilst we cannot meet the Italian side until the final, it would still be so typical of West Ham to be stung by one of our former players at the final knockings of the competition.

We will have the devil’s own job of progressing past Bayer Leverkusen in the quarters but let’s just say we do, and we end up meeting Atalanta in the final out in Dublin in May.

An in-form Gianluca Scamacca lining up against us in the Europa League final, and hurting us on the night, would be so typical.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. As things stand, I still think we got it right by selling him in the summer. However, if he maintains his current form between now and the end of the season, I may well be proven wrong.
