Tottenham’s high energy and high defensive line game under Ange Postecoglou has caught plenty of attention this season.
The new Spurs boss has enjoyed a good first season in charge at Tottenham on the whole. They are well in the mix for the top four spots and for the first time in years, seem to have fans fully onboard in terms of the style of football on offer.
However, the goal against column is something that could be worked on. Tottenham’s 39 against is a whopping 15 more than table topping rivals, Arsenal. But, that is how Postecoglou wants his team to play, albeit it leaving himself open to critics.
And speaking about the way Tottenham defender on the Planet Premier League podcast, one of those critics, Cesc Fabregas, has said that he doesn’t like it one bit.
Cesc Fabregas unhappy with how Tottenham defend
Speaking openly about his dislike for the way Spurs defend, Fabregas suggested it’s a way to have no control over the game.
“It is brave and you need to trust your players a lot but for me you are not in control because you’re physically reacting, you’re not pro-active. You’re reacting to movements, to whatever the striker wants to do. If he comes deep, I come with him, if he attacks the space I go with him. I am not a big fan of this as I say because you are not in control of the situation. He’s dictating the play for you. I like to dictate my play, like to dictate the defence. I like my defenders to control the tempo and space of the game. Not that their strikers mark the line for us. That’s why I am a big fan of the zonal defending,” Fabregas said.
Postecoglou will keep doing his thing
The Tottenham manager is now one to be put off by what the media or pundits have to say and he’ll not be worried one bit about this.
Fabregas does make an interesting point in fairness to him and he at least offers some reasoning behind why he doesn’t go along with this way of defending.
But at the end of the day, Big Ange will carry on doing as he knows. And in fairness, so far, it’s worked out just nicely for the Spurs boss.
