G7 warns Iran against handing over ballistic missiles to Russia

G7 leaders on Friday warned the Iranian government that it faces new sanctions if it passes on ballistic missiles to Russia.

"Were Iran to proceed with providing ballistic missiles or related technology to Russia, we are prepared to respond swiftly and in a coordinated manner including with new and significant measures against Iran," a joint statement said.

Iran had already supplied Russia with drones, which were used in attacks on the civilian population in Ukraine, the G7 said.

"We reiterate our call on third parties to immediately cease providing material support to Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable war of aggression against Ukraine or face severe costs."

The G7 group of democratic industrialized nations consists of Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Japan, Canada and the US. Italy currently holds the G7 presidency.
