Johannes Thingnes Bø took another step towards a fifth biathlon overall World Cup title by dominating the final sprint race of the season in historic fashion on Friday in Canada while his brother Tarjei clinched the discipline title with a third-place finish.

Norway's Bø shot clean under sunny skies in Canmore to claim his sixth victory of the season and 74th overall, a massive 1 minute 2.7 seconds ahead of Italian Tommaso Giacomel who had one penalty lap.

It was the largest ever winning margin in a men's 10 kilometres sprint, the ruling body IBU said.

“It was one of my best sprints, probably my best race so far this year. I really enjoyed it. I found a great pace and had energy all the way to the end," the winner said.

Tarjei Bø was another 1.5 seconds back in third, also with one missed target.

That made him slip 92 points behind his brother in the overall list with two two races left, but enough to win the sprint trophy.

Former sprint world champion Benedikt Doll of Germany finished a disappointing 23rd in his last career race in the discipline.

Doll will retire after the season which concludes with pursuit and mass start races for men and women Saturday and Sunday at the Canadian venue.

The fight for the women's overall title is much closer, with Norway's Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold just seven points ahead of Italian skier Vittozzi.
