'Considering...': Danny Rohl hailed for 'clever' thing he's done behind the scenes at Sheffield Wednesday

Danny Rohl has been hailed for the ‘clever’ thing he’s done behind the scenes at Sheffield Wednesday.

Rohl is earning plaudits for everything he’s doing on the pitch at Sheffield Wednesday.

He and his impressive Owls team have closed what was an eight-point gap to safety last month to just one point, following a run of five wins in their last seven.

And the turnaround in form has been facilitated by some genuinely impressive football; Sheffield Wednesday have been dominant in wins over Rotherham United and Plymouth Argyle in particular, even going toe to toe with Leeds United despite the 2-0 defeat.

Now though, Rohl is being praised for some specific work he’s done off the pitch.

Stuart Rayner hails ‘clever’ Danny Rohl for leaving spaces open in Sheffield Wednesday squad

Following the January transfer window, Rohl left three spaces in his Sheffield Wednesday first-team for players to register.

It was initially for free agents to potentially come in; Ravel Morrison was linked with Sheffield Wednesday and then Nico Schulz was training with the Owls, but neither would sign.

In his pre-Ipswich Town press conference on Thursday, Rohl revealed that his free agent hunt is now over, but that the likes of Jeff Hendrick and Lee Gregory could be registered for the final run-in.

Rohl previously hinted that Callum Paterson would also be registered; Paterson is now close to making his return to action.

And Rohl has been praised for his handling of this particular situation, with journalist Stuart Rayner saying on the Yorkshire Post’s FootballTalk Podcast:

“Considering that Danny Rohl has basically sidelined a few players, he must have managed things pretty well. We know there’s a few players not registered to play at the moment, but I think he was quite clever in keeping a couple of places open so that people have got something to still play for.”

Jeff Hendrick, Lee Gregory, and Callum Paterson for to return for the Owls

All three players have had mixed seasons; Hendrick and Gregory especially with Rohl clearly not favouring the pair, and with both having injury issues too.

Paterson has featured 19 times in the Championship and remains an important player, though again, injuries has limited him in terms of appearances this time round.

All three though are very experienced players and in Paterson’s case, he’s a very versatile player which is always useful to a manager.

And now with the trio set to return, it’ll not only provide Rohl with some added depth and experience during this crucial time, but it’ll also add some competition.

Like Rayner alludes to, the trio returning will keep everyone on their toes for a starting spot; Paterson especially could keep a few players like Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama on their toes with the pair being the only real wide players available right now.
