Kids at 25 N.J. high schools can start earning degrees early in new college partnership

Twenty-five local high schools have partnered with Rowan College of South Jersey, creating a collegiate program that gives students skills and resources to jumpstart their post-secondary careers before they graduate.

On Tuesday, the college announced that institutions participating in the collaboration include 21 public schools in Gloucester and Cumberland counties, as well as four South Jersey Catholic schools.

These local schools will now be officially recognized as “RCSJ Collegiate High Schools.”

Those involved in the program will give students opportunities to earn college credits while taking courses in high school.

Also, a “RCSJ period” will be introduced, providing students with time to complete college-level coursework. There will be transportation available to Rowan College of South Jersey’s campuses for lectures and lab courses during this period, officials said.

“RCSJ Collegiate High School takes education to the next level, providing an affordable, practical way to earn college credits and prepare for the rigors of excelling in a collegiate environment — all before high school graduation,” Rowan College of South Jersey officials said in a statement.

The college, with campuses in both the Vineland-Millvile area and Sewell, is a hybrid school that partners with Rowan University to provide affordable options for students to get two or four-year degrees.

In 2019, Rowan College at Gloucester County and Cumberland County College merged into one to help lower costs of tuition and provide students with more educational options.

Students who participate in the program will be supported through pathways that the college has mapped out to help them earn bachelor’s degrees, school officials said. These pathways, which begin while the student is in high school, include financial aid assistance, summer programs, coaching and scholarship opportunities, according to the college.

Rowan College of South Jersey plans to expand this program in the near future to include more high schools outside of Cumberland and Gloucester counties, officials said.
