Anthony Gordon now names the one Newcastle star he 'wouldn't be able to get near' if they played each other

Anthony Gordon has been in fantastic form for Newcastle United this season.

After a difficult start to his Newcastle career, the winger is making the £40m spent on him look like something of a bargain.

Billed as one of the leading players in the Premier League this season, Gordon was rewarded for his fine form with a first call-up to the England squad.

Indeed, the 23-year-old could even make his debut for the Three Lions against Brazil at Wembley next weekend.

In fact, he could even come up against a teammate in the form of £40m star Bruno Guimaraes.

Guimaraes was full of praise for Gordon following the news he had been called up to represent his country for the first time at senior level.

Unsurprisingly, the England hopeful returned the favour and even admitted when speaking on the club’s YouTube channel that he wouldn’t be able to get close to Guimaraes, should the two come into direct contact next week.

“Hopefully I win,” he said.

“But hopefully I’m not directly against him because I probably wouldn’t be able to get near him.

“He’s a top player and I know he loves playing for his national team, just as I will. It will just be a great day for everyone at Newcastle as well. You’ve got two players at a very high level playing in a very high level game. I’m really pleased for him as well.”

Newcastle news: Gordon and Guimaraes show the platform

This season has been remarkably frustrating.

Still, seeing two Newcastle players perhaps playing leading roles for storied nations serves to remind of the quality in Eddie Howe’s squad. With Alexander Isak, Tino Livramento, Sven Botman (albeit not in current form) and Sandro Tonali also on the books, Newcastle have some truly fantastic players.

That hasn’t been seen often enough this season but the club do at least have the platform to grow with so many talented players on offer. Guimaraes, of course, may end up leaving but it’s not as if there aren’t other exciting names available to Howe.

Gordon and Guimaraes have more than pulled their weight this season. Watching them strut their stuff at Wembley will be fantastic for the club.
