Report: Leeds now want 'outstanding' Newcastle player if promoted; he's made 25 PL appearances this season

Leeds United are considering a move for one Newcastle United player should they seal promotion to the Premier League this season.

The Whites, of course, continue to battle with Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton for the two automatic-promotion spots in the Championship. And Daniel Farke’s side could go top of the table with a victory today.

Understandably, the Leeds hierarchy are making plans in case they do manage to get across the line. And one player on their radar appears to be facing an uncertain future at St James’ Park.

Leeds considering Sean Longstaff move

According to a report from the Sunday Mirror (17/3; page 66), Leeds are monitoring Sean Longstaff, with the midfielder currently approaching the final 12 months of his contract on Tyneside.

The Mirror notes that preliminary talks over fresh terms have been held. But Leeds are prepared to spend up to £15 million in the summer if the 26-year-old does not manage to reach an agreement over an extension.

Newcastle exit looks unlikely after this season

It is a surprise to hear that Leeds are eyeing Longstaff. This season has been much more disappointing for Newcastle, with Eddie Howe’s side not kicking on from their top-four finish last year.

But Longstaff has still made 36 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies this season. And he has made more than 170 appearances for Newcastle during his career.

Newcastle have not been able to spend a limitless amount under their current owners. So you would think that they will only be looking to sell the first-team stars who can bring in eye-watering sums which they can then invest.

£15 million for Longstaff is unlikely to change the game for Newcastle and their summer plans. At times, he has been ‘outstanding‘ for the club.

Perhaps the situation may change if Leeds get promoted and Newcastle look at signings which threaten to push the academy graduate down the pecking order.
