Former White House chief Donald Trump hopes that in the event of victory in the election, he won't have to decide whether to continue aiding Ukraine or allow Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to continue occupying territories, according to Trump in an interview with Fox News.
Responding to questions about whether he would continue providing weapons to Ukraine and whether he would allow Russia to continue occupying Ukrainian territories if necessary, Trump said he hopes it doesn't come to that. He specifically added that by the time he assumes the presidency, more than nine months will have passed, which is an "eternity" in terms of war and politics.
According to the Republican, the issue of the war between Ukraine and Russia is very painful for him because if he were president, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin would never have dared to invade.
"If we had a real leader, he [Putin] would have never done that. Remember, he didn’t do it. For four years, he didn’t do it. And there was no real threat that he would do it. And I spoke to him about that, I said, ‘You can’t do it.’ [...] He would have never done it if I was president, and all those people would be living, and all those great cities – you know, those ancient domes, you can’t replace that," said the US presidential candidate.
US election
The presidential election in the United States are scheduled for November 5, 2024. It is expected that the main competitors, as in 2020, will be:
- Joe Biden, the incumbent White House chief, Democrat;
- Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States (2017-2021), Republican.
Earlier, former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley planned to participate in the presidential elections on behalf of the Republican Party. However, on March 6, she announced her withdrawal from the race. Some Republicans considered her as a replacement for Trump, who faced criminal cases after attempting to influence the results of the 2020 elections.
Trump, for his part, has regularly called for an end to the war in Ukraine. Among other things, he promised to supposedly influence this if he wins in future elections.
