'I was in Newcastle': Jeff Stelling now shares what he noticed about Newcastle United fans last week

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is under pressure, as the 2023/24 season took another turn for the worse.

It is already proving to be a challenging campaign for Eddie Howe, and it will now be another season without a trophy. That is because Newcastle United were knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday, losing 2-0 to Manchester City.

Now all Newcastle have to fight for is a place in Europe, with either Europa League or Conference League football still a possibility. But even that is not certain, and the Magpies need to fix their Premier League form to guarantee qualification.

Compared to last season, this one has been much more challenging, and it has led to questions being asked about Eddie Howe’s credentials as Toon manager. There have been rumblings of discontent, but former Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling believes that the fans are still very much behind Howe.

Jeff Stelling says Newcastle fans still back Eddie Howe

Jeff Stelling has been speaking about the Newcastle manager on TalkSPORT on Monday, and shared what he noticed about Toon fans when he visited Tyneside last week.

“I was in Newcastle last Wednesday,” he said.

“Almost to a man, people were still behind Eddie Howe. But, of course, it’s not the supporters who make the ultimate decision.”

Newcastle owners must back Eddie Howe

Having visited Newcastle last week during his live tour, Stelling spoke to Toon fans. And he is adamant that pretty much everyone he spoke to was still in favour of Howe being Newcastle United manager.

The former Bournemouth man still has the support of the Toon Army, even if there has been a bit of a turn on social media. But in the real world, Newcastle fans still believe that Howe is the correct man for the job, and rightly so.

Mitigating circumstances have hindered him this season, while there was always going to be a regression from what we achieved last year.

But Howe deserves our support. While it is easy to criticise during this difficult spell, sacking him would be a completely kneejerk reaction.

However, as Stelling says, the decision will rest with the Newcastle owners, rather than the fans. We know that Amanda Staveley and the other British owners back Howe, but it remains to be seen what PIF think.
