21-year-old Chelsea player really does deserve pay rise after rumours of new contract - opinion

Chelsea could already be set to hand one of their recent signings a new contract.

Cole Palmer only joined Chelsea from Manchester City last summer, but his incredible impact could see him offered a better deal soon.

According to the Daily Star, Chelsea are ready to reward the attacker with a pay rise after his excellent season at Stamford Bridge.

It is just speculation for now, but if the 21-year-old was given a new contract with a higher salary, no one would probably have any complaints.

At this moment in time, Palmer is Chelsea’s best player, so you can make the argument that he should be on a deal that reflects that.

Cole Palmer’s stats show he may deserve new contract

The kind of numbers Palmer has put up in a Chelsea shirt this season, no one would have expected it.

After all, this is someone who had barely played in the Premier League prior to his move to west London. Yet since linking up with Mauricio Pochettino‘s side, the Englishman has scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in the top flight.

Across all competitions for Chelsea, Palmer has been directly involved in 26 goals, which is incredible.

“He’s such a beautiful player to watch,” former Blues defender Jason Cundy said during his old side’s 4-2 win against Leicester City in the FA Cup yesterday.

It is no lie, with Palmer able to bring joy to Chelsea supporters right now with his goals, assists and clever play.

It was a little flick to Carney Chukwuemeka that allowed the midfielder to win the match for Pochettino’s men yesterday.

What is scary is Palmer is still only 21, playing in a Chelsea team that have been so poor this term. In a Chelsea side that can perform much better, one not sitting 11th in the Premier League table, what could Palmer actually be capable of?

Indeed, if the England international, who has recently been praised by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, keeps this up, then Chelsea are going to have to give him that pay rise.
