'I think he'll be sold': Journalist says his gut feeling is Arsenal will cash in on 21-year-old this summer

Journalist James McNicholas has suggested that his gut feeling is that Arsenal will look to sell Mika Biereth this summer, with the striker flying out on loan.

Mika Biereth is yet to make his debut for the Arsenal first-team. But he is certainly winning a lot of admirers with his form this season.

Initially, the Dane joined Motherwell and scored six goals and contributed five assists in 16 games. Nevertheless, Arsenal instead sent him to Sturm Graz in the January transfer window.

With that, it is inevitable that Arsenal fans will wonder what kind of role he will end up with upon his return. Despite Mikel Arteta’s side sitting at the top of the Premier League, there remains a feeling that the striker position remains a work in progress for the Gunners.

Of course, Arsenal supporters are probably not expecting to see Biereth starting anytime soon. But perhaps some may hope that he does have a role in the squad next season.

However, speaking on Arsecast Extra, McNicholas has suggested that he would not be surprised to see Arsenal cash in in the summer.

“When we signed him from Fulham, I think he was the top goalscorer in the division at the time at that level. He scored an absurd amount of goals for them,” he said.

“He’s a really good, solid centre forward player. He’s 21 now. With these talents, a lot of the time, you feel if their first-team breakthrough is going to happen, especially in the attacking part of the pitch, it tends to be a bit earlier than that. It tends to be 18, 19, 20 we do see these players in the Arsenal first-team.

“I don’t think he’ll come back. I think he’ll be sold.

“That’s my gut feeling [that the time is right to sell].”

Gunners victims of their own success

McNicholas’ assessment of Biereth’s situation highlights the problem some of the younger players now face at Arsenal.

Bukayo Saka is obviously one of the world’s best wingers now. But there is surely no doubt that Arsenal being a bit of a mess – by their standards – helped when he was looking to break into the side.

Prospects such as Miguel Azeez and Marcelo Flores have had to move on. And of course, Arsenal decided that they would be better off selling Folarin Balogun. Meanwhile, there is surely a big question mark over the future of Charlie Patino.

The bar at Arsenal has risen to another level. And with that, some very talented players have had to leave.

So you can understand why there is an expectation that this summer may prove to be the right time to sell Biereth.
