‘He is a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant footballer’: Conor Coady blown away by 29-year-old Chelsea star

Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea are not having the best of seasons.

Chelsea are not going to finish in the top four of the Premier League table yet again and will not play in the UEFA Champions League.

The Blues have been so poor in the league this season that they may not even finish in the top half of the league.

Chelsea also lost the final of the Carabao Cup to Premier League rivals Liverpool, but the London club did progress to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side beat Championship club Leicester City 4-2 at Stamford Bridge in London in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup this past weekend.

It was an eventful match in which some Chelsea fans booed Raheem Sterling. The former Liverpool and Manchester City star provided an assist, but the 29-year-old England international also failed to score from a penalty and took a really poor free kick.

Sterling has not had the best of times at Chelsea since his move from City in the summer of 2022 and could be sold at the end of the season.

Leicester City defender Conor Coady comments on Chelsea attacker Raheem Sterling

Leicester defender Conor Coady plays/played with Sterling for England and also knows him from their time at Liverpool, and he does not think that the Chelsea fans were right to jeer him, noting just how good he is.

Coady said about Sterling on The Monday Night Club on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Yes, I was (aware). I heard it and saw it, but at the time when it’s happening, you don’t really kind of know what’s going on.

“I will be honest from a footballer’s point of view. I didn’t like it. It’s not something that I enjoy, those sorts of things.

“I am probably a little bit biased because I am a friend of Raheem as well, but to hear that to any footballer is tough, from his own set of supporters, what it does to a player and I think what he has done in his career, I think he has been fantastic.

“I think he is a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant footballer. So, I think to hear that from your own set of supporters is really really tough.”

My View: Chelsea fans need to support Raheem Sterling

In my opinion, the Chelsea fans who booed Raheem Sterling against Leicester City at Stamford Bridge were wrong.

Yes, Sterling, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or as a winger, is not having a great season, but he needs the backing of the Chelsea fans and needs them to support him.

Sterling does work hard and gives his best everything he is on a football pitch. It has just not clicked for him yet at Chelsea.

The Englishman has scored eight goals and given 10 assists in 36 matches in all competitions for Chelsea this season.
