'Rookie': Danny Rohl now told what 'mistakes' he made in Sheffield Wednesday's defeat v Ipswich Town

Sheffield Wednesday succumbed to a heavy defeat in the Championship last weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday have now lost their last two Championship fixtures after wining their previous four beforehand.

The Owls saw their winning streak halted by Leeds United who won 2-0 at Hillsborough earlier in the month, with Danny Rohl then overseeing a 6-0 defeat vs Ipswich Town last weekend.

Rohl made some changes for the game; he reverted from a back-five to a back-four, with Wednesday going very attacking in the opening stages.

But as soon as the first goal went in after 15 minutes, two more would follow before the break, and three more after the break as Sheffield Wednesday capitulated.

Danny Rohl explains tactical change in Sheffield Wednesday defeat

Rohl’s change to a back-four raised a lot of eyebrows before the game.

Then seeing how Ipswich dominated the Owls, Rohl was forced to explain the change to a back-four, saying:

“When my team concedes six goals then you can always ask me such a question. It’s then my job as a manager; I accept this, when you prepare for the game you are thinking, ‘OK, how can I win this game?’ And not how can you not concede goals. This is more my thinking.”

Rohl added:

“When I looked at the form, normally our four best offensive guys, with a lot of individual quality… We want to be on the front foot.”

Dom Howson urges patience with ‘rookie boss’ Danny Rohl

Taking to X, journalist Dom Howson jumped to the defence of the 34-year-old Rohl.

Howson points out the fact that Sheffield Wednesday are only in a position to challenge for Championship safety because of the good work of Rohl so far.

Sheffield Wednesday were without a prayer when Xisco Munoz left the club earlier in the season, but under Rohl they’re a completely different team.

Howson posted:

Danny Rohl’s career so far

Rohl, who is the English Football League’s youngest boss, had a brief and fairly uneventful playing career in the lower leagues of Germany, quickly turning his attention to coaching at a young age.

He worked through the Red Bull system with Leipzig, later going on to hold coaching positions with Southampton, Bayern Munich, and the German national side where he worked under Hansi Flick who attended the recent Plymouth Argyle win.

Rohl applied for the Sheffield Wednesday job last summer but was overlooked, later being hired by Dejphon Chansiri at a second time of asking.

Expect Danny Rohl to learn quick lessons at Sheffield Wednesday

Rohl, is nothing else, has shown his ability to improvise.

He’s had to work with a very limited team with very limited resources and facilities, but he’s somehow found a way to get the team firing.

Rohl has worked with a few different formations this season. But the back-five seemed to be working wonders through the recent winning streak.

Rohl then decided to attack Ipswich and try and beat them at their own game, but they were completely outclassed by the Tractor Boys.

Few expected Wednesday to take anything from that game and so it’ll quickly be viewed as a one-off result, with Rohl certain to take a lot of lessons and knowledge from that defeat.

This current international break also comes at a good time for the Owls who need to restock and rethink ahead of the final run-in, with several players also vying to get back to fitness ahead of the Swansea City clash later this month.

Like Howson points out, Rohl has made mistakes; he’s only human. But expect him to learn very quickly from his errors.

Sheffield Wednesday return to action vs Swansea City later this month.
