European extreme left target extreme right ahead of elections

The European Left group wants to score points in the European election campaign with demands for affordable housing, free access to education, healthcare and public transport.

"We have drawn up an election programme that is unique in that it is written from the perspective of the working class and young people," said Austria's Left Party lead candidate Walter Baier in an interview with dpa and other European news agencies in Brussels.

The main issues the far left plans to target ahead of the June European Parliament elections are therefore "the social, economic and ecological interests of the European people."

According to Baier, it is essential to pay attention to the "social interests of the working class" in order to combat the extreme right in Europe. However, climate change must not be forgotten in the fight for social justice.

"Ecological reorganization must go hand in hand with the reduction of social inequalities," Baier said.

He said he also did not believe that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen would be able to implement these values and strategies.

He therefore ruled out the possibility of the Left supporting her in the European elections.

Von der Leyen is seeking a second term as president of the European Commission after the election in the summer, for which she also needs a majority in the European Parliament.
