MUTV pundit praises 'superb' Man Utd U21 star after 3 goal contribution display

On Monday night, the Manchester United U21s walked out 3-0 winners over the Baggies as one man starred.

While others may have stolen the initial headlines such as Ethan Ennis scoring a first goal since 2022.

Another huge story from the game for Manchester United was 16-year-old Bendito Mantato making his debut at this level.

But it was Charlie McNeill who had the defining performance in the game as he grabbed three goal contributions for the academy side.

Ben Thornley praises Charlie McNeill

Speaking on MUTV during the United vs West Brom coverage at U21 level, Ben Thornley couldn’t help but rave over McNeill who left him in awe with his display.

The 20-year-old scored and assisted two in the 3-0 win and has been praised for this.

“It’s not easy when you’re bearing down on goal to keep your composure, to choose the right finish but Charlie here chooses exactly the right finish.

“You do get players that will be going through on goal and there’ll be all sorts going through their mind, it never ever feels like this with Charlie McNeill.

“Once he gets into that position, he has got the real confidence to be able to produce a finish like we’ve just seen.

“He’d been waiting for a goal all night and when given the opportunity, he took it extremely well because that’s a lot harder than he made it look. His spatial awareness all night was superb.”

McNeill deserves some sort of Manchester United chance

Being 20, McNeill will probably arrive at a bit of a crossroads this summer, as he is reaching an age when playing youth football is a pointless exercise.

After an unsuccessful loan during the first part of the season, making just three Stevenage appearances, McNeill returned in January despite scoring on his loan.

There is little prospect of him getting first-team minutes right now, and he likely needs to be sent on loan – successfully – next season if he stands a chance of being a success at Old Trafford.

He must continue to perform at this level for the U21s until the end of the season for United in order to help himself secure the best loan possible for next season.
