'Being on the sidelines': Matheus Cunha sends emotional message after watching Wolves lose to Coventry

Wolves were dumped out of the FA Cup on Saturday by Coventry City and yesterday, Matheus Cunha sent a message to supporters on social media.

Wolves missed out on the chance to go to Wembley for a semi-final, losing 3-2 at Molineux in dramatic fashion.

Wolves turned the game around after falling behind to an Ellis Simms goal, and led 2-1 after goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri and Hugo Bueno.

But Coventry hit back in injury-time through Simms again and Hagi Wright, and the result still stings for a lot of supporters days later.

It is a result that is probably going to hurt for most of the international break, but Matheus Cunha took to social media last night to check in with fans and provide some perspective…

Cunha was unable to feature on Saturday, which was a shame.

The Brazilian had returned to full Wolves training in the week, after Gary O’Neil had said the player was in contention to play.

But he just didn’t quite make it, and Wolves undoubtedly missed him, with his replacement Nathan Fraser having a tough day at the office.

Cunha was there watching on Saturday and shared in the pain of the supporters. But yesterday, he took to social media to send out a positive message.

He said: “Hello to all Wolves fans. This weekend was difficult for all of us at the club, especially for us players. Being on the sidelines and not being able to help is even more difficult. But being on the sidelines I realise how proud I am of everything we players and staff are doing.

“We really wanted to be at Wembley, but it was how it was, with determination until the end and that’s what football is like. Our season has things to do, and we will do everything to achieve goals only those who lived at this club this season could believe in. Thanks for the support @Wolves.”

Cunha return will be huge for Wolves

The defeat to Coventry was difficult to take, but the message from Cunha may take the edge off a bit for some. The players who were available gave it everything, but it just wasn’t to be.

You can tell that the Brazilian just loves this club and being a part of the journey, and it’s just a shame that he couldn’t have any involvement on Saturday.

A fully fit Cunha may well have contributed to a different end result.

His return could potentially be huge for Wanderers. Prior to his setback he was in sensational form and was making an impact every time he stepped out onto the pitch.

Without doubt, Wolves need him back in the team and firing if European football is to become a reality.
