The Bundesliga is the most special title for Bayer Leverkusen to win in their treble bid, left back Alejandro Grimaldo has said.

Spain international Grimaldo arrived in summer from Benfica and is yet to taste defeat in the 38 official games this season.

Leverkusen top the Bundesliga by 10 points with eight games left, are the only top flight club left in the German Cup semi-finals, and are in the Europa League quarter-finals.

Leverkusen won the German Cup in 1993, the UEFA Cup in 1988, but have never claimed the Bundesliga title, with several near misses in the past.

"The Bundesliga would be special," Grimaldo told Tuesday's Marca sports daily.

"To come here and win a title in my first year that Bayer Leverkusen has never won would mean making history. It is something the whole team and I want to achieve. And I believe we are on the right path."

Grimaldo has been involved in 26 goals since his arrival and is keen on silverware.

"I have always won titles in my career and I came her to win more. Hopefully the first ones since season," he said.

Grimaldo, who came through the Barcelona academy, won four Portuguese league titles as part of several trophies during his Benfica term 2016-2023.

Grimaldo heaped praise on countryman Xabi Alonso who has guided Leverkusen to success since becoming coach in the autumn of 2022.

"I had very good coaches in my career, at Barcelona and Benfica. But Xabi is something special. There are not many coaches like him in the world of football," Grimaldo said.

"It is clear that I would like to continue with him," added Grimaldo on Alonso who is reportedly sought by his former clubs Bayern Munich and Liverpool who need a new coach in summer.
