Guillem Balague drops claim on Enzo Maresca’s future amid Leicester City FFP worries

Leicester City look set to receive a charge for breaching Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules during the 2022/23 season.

The Foxes could be handed a substantial points deduction next term which would dent their hopes of surviving in the Premier League if they are to gain promotion from the Championship.

Enzo Maresca has admitted that it could be a distraction to his players heading into the business end of the gruelling promotion race.

“Even if they are human beings and they use social media, so they read information, and this can be something bad for the players,” the Italian head coach said.

It’s certainly uncertain times at the football club and it leaves a lot of doubt around the summer transfer window, with key players potentially moving on.

Maresca may have to contend with limited resources in the window and that has naturally drawn questions to his City future, given how ambitious he is.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague appeared on BBC Radio Leicester’s When Your Smiling podcast this week.

The former Sky Sports pundit has a good relationship with Maresca and has interviewed the City boss previously.

Asked about Maresca’s future, given City’s FFP concerns, Balague said: “Nobody will want not to be backed but as long as you’re in a place where you know that you’re going to compete at all levels then it’s give and take isn’t it.

“He probably wants a club that has got all the conditions to stay in the Premier League for good.”

It certainly sounds like Maresca’s won’t want to be restricted in the market for long and he’ll be pushing the club to improve in all departments, not just on the pitch.

It’s pretty evident that he’ll go on to achieve big things in his managerial career, so City must recognise just how talented of a coach they have on their hands.

With that said the club chiefs must find a way to back him without having to sell on talismanic figures like Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

An uncertain summer awaits Leicester City

Nobody, particularly outside of the club, really knows how Leicester‘s summer transfer window will look. Indeed, a lot will depend on if they return to the top flight.

It has been mooted that they’re in line to breach PSR this season, so funds may need to be raised before the end of June.

That has led many to the idea that it could be somewhat of a firesale at the end of the campaign, with high-value assets potentially moving on.

One thing’s for sure, Leicester can’t afford to standstill or else they could face losing their promising young manager.
