Audi's new electric SUV marks a technological leap

It took longer than expected, but the electric version of the Audi Q6 SUV should be in European showrooms by mid-year. It heralds a new technically-advanced generation. Audi AG/dpa

The upcoming electric Audi Q6 SUV ushers in new era of zero-emission models from the brand, based on an advanced 800V architecture.

It is the first model to use the PPE family developed jointly with Porsche. PPE stands for Premium Platform Electric and is the modular platform system for high-quality electric cars from the VW Group.

According to Audi, the Q6 e-tron heralds a large-scale model offensive with PPE underpinning half a dozen more battery-powered cars from VW Group marques in the near future.

The PPE platform uses an 800V architecture, like the Porsche Taycan which allows for ultra-quick charging. Q6 e-tron owners will be able to charge their cars at speeds of up to 270kW, allowing enough electrons to flow in 10 minutes for up to 255 kilometres of range.

Styling of the re-jigged Q6 is evolutionary rather than sensational and the chunky car will go on sale mid-year, initially be priced at €74,700 in its home market of Germany.

First on the highway are two all-wheel drive versions which are technically closely related to the new edition of the Porsche Macan.

These have up to 380 kW/517 horsepower on tap, a 100 kWh battery for 625 kilometres at best and top speeds of up to 230 km/h. Two rear-wheel drive models with a smaller battery are to follow later, bringing the price below €70,000.

Audi is also switching to a new digital cockpit with an XXL head-up display. The manufacturer stresses the Q6's practical virtues too. The wheelbase of 2.90 metres ensures plenty of space in the rear.

The rear boot has a capacity of between 526 to 1,529 litres and unlike with the Q4 and Q8 e-tron, there is a second boot with 64 litres under the front bonnet.
