Mauricio Pochettino simply must start 24-year-old Chelsea player in every game from now on – opinion

Mauricio Pochettino did a tiny bit of tinkering to his squad before they took part in the FA Cup quarter-final with Leicester City on Sunday.

While they booked their place in the final with a 4-2 win over the Championship leaders, it was certainly not plain sailing after they were pegged back from a 2-0 first half lead.

It took two substitutions made in the second half of the game to secure another trip to Wembley, as Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke struck late at Stamford Bridge.

Pochettino has to start Petrovic

One position that has not really been touched in 2024 was the goalkeeper role, with Djordje Petrovic establishing himself as the clear number one right now.

After coming into the side in December, he had hardly given up his place off the back of some extremely impressive performances.

This run went on until the last game though, with Robert Sanchez back in the side off the back of his recent injury recovery.

It is fair to say that confidence was not installed in a Blues team who still looked to play out the back despite the unfamiliar nature of the goalkeeper and two centre-backs.

Sanchez fails to impress

There can’t be too much blame put on the Spaniard as far as the second goal is concerned, with him beaten by a sensational strike.

Questions may be asked by some of his positioning when the long backpass from Axel Disasi ended up in the bottom corner to get their opponents back into the game.

While it did not lead to a negative result, tinkering for the sake of it is the kind of thing that will see Pochettino lose even more faith from some supporters who were keen to make their feelings known that they were frustrated.

For this reason, until given any reason to not do, Petrovic should remain in the starting side going forwards.
